Seek Joy: Sewing

I have, what some might consider, a problem of too many markers. In contrast, I believe this is an issue of inadequate storage for an amount of markers.
Here is my solution, which I found during a trip to quilting shops with Mom. Of course, this doesn't quite fit my style, and I have never sewn anything nearly as complicated before, but why should that stop me?
To solve the first issue, I purchased a stack of fat quarters all featuring national park images. To solve the second issue, I simply followed the directions and began ignoring tasks I didn't want to do.
Ta-da! The first thing I decided to ignore was the exterior pockets. As this was meant to be a bag for markers, I didn't need them. The second thing I ignored was the batting material. I used some leftover quilted cushion fabric. I figured that was close enough, it was thrifty, and I used some of my stash. Lastly, the zipper had to go. Pink wouldn't do, so I used a black zipper that was either my Grandma's or my Great-Grandma's. It was much longer than what was called for, but that's fine.
Not only was I able to sew something I had never attempted before, but all of the markers fit, and I think it's super cute. I've been carrying it around with me ever since I finished it. It brings me so much joy!
Begin where you are. Never let not having tried something stop you from diving in. Will it be as perfect as a store-bought item? Probably not. But, I bet you'll love it more than one. Sewing your items provides you with the opportunity to customize them to your taste at every step. Not everyone is comfortable with flouting the directions, but I encourage you to see them as guidelines.
If you'd like to give this super sturdy little bag a try, you can find the pattern here. And if you do make one, I would LOVE to see your results!
