Site Update 2025-04-30

Planned site updates you will notice as of today: Some minor tweaks to the layouts of the pages, as well as new titles and paragraphs for established page sections.

Previously, there was a very professional and businesslike vibe to the verbiage on craftraven. I felt it needed to be more me and my vibe. As craftraven grows and my ideas become more fully fledged, I think it is prudent to embrace change and see where it takes us.

An unexpected site update was discovering that Wix is transitioning from forums to groups. This caught me unawares and injected some stress into my day. I hadn't planned to spend extra hours learning how a new template works and revamping its appearance to be cohesive with the site. You can probably tell this if you drop by the new forum page and see that I haven't quite gotten it up to its…

Book Club: Current Reads

I ordered a few books through ThriftBooks, and while waiting for them to be delivered, I decided to reread Cheryl Peck's Fat Girls and Lawn Chairs.

I remember being so amused by her short musings on her life and family during my first read-through. It's a quick and easy read; candy for the brain, as a friend calls such things. The majority of it is light-hearted.

It is different rereading a book after 20 years of living. I don't see the book any differently. I still enjoyed it. However, her life doesn't seem as dramatically different from my own as I once saw it. Perhaps the older we get, the more we see our similarities to others rather than our differences.

Next in the line-up: Jenny Lawson's Broken (in the best possible way) or Kate Mosse's Warrior Queens & Quiet Revolutionaries - How Women (Also) Built the World.

I just today finished 'Broken (in the best possible way)'! It has the same format and vibe as 'Furiously Happy' and definitely had me laughing until I cried, too! I'm glad you're enjoying 'Furiously Happy'! It's one of my favorite books 🥰

A new project has been added: Kerby Rosanes' adult coloring book "geomorphia." I hope you enjoy perusing my colored pages while you wait for the blog post about adult coloring books, scheduled for later this month!

Also, a minor tweak to the Home page moved the About section there and removed the separate About page. This was done purely for aesthetics and perhaps to improve the bounce rate.

I'll slowly be editing images for file type and size. This shouldn't visually impact your experience at all, and the hope is that the site will be even speedier.

We've some new blog posts that dropped and new photos in the Quilt Mending Project.

Check out the Quilt Mending and Joy Journal projects that are on-going.

  • A new book was added to the resources page!

  • The "Projects" page is now live. Follow along with my activities and why I do them.

  • I brought back the horizontal menu on the desktop version of the site because the Header felt naked and empty.

Book Club

I am currently reading "Give and Take" by Adam Grant. I like the premise of it, discussing how natural givers can be some of the most respected and influential people in their fields. I find it too dry and clinical to be engaging, though. I've read other works where they deliver the information, including the resources they reference and scientific studies, in a way that's easier to absorb.

Chris Guillebeau's "The Happiness of Pursuit" shares other's pursuits much more concisely- though, I wish he didn't use "as we'll see later" so much. Gretchen Rubin's "The Happiness Project" slips in quotes and references to studies in a less academic way so that it doesn't break up the flow of her message. Many other authors in the genre add humor or anecdotes that lighten up the information, making it more digestible.

I'm reading less because I'm not enjoying the "work" it takes…

Oh that is excellent advice! You made the rule, you can break or change it. I didn't think of it that way. I have definitely been relieved having put it down. I finished Half Arse Human (a blog post will drop soon with my thoughts on it,) and am currently reading Love Your Enemies by Arthur C. Brooks. Both have been much more mentally rewarding than pushing through a book I wasn't enjoying!
